Yesterday was New Orleans Pridefest 2007. It was held at Washington Square Park in the Faubourg Marigny and ran from noon to 5pm.
While some of the performances left a bit to be desired, Lisa Lynn and the Charmaine Neville Band were outstanding. There were food venders, local craftswomen, drag queen races, the Krewe of Armenius had a pop two balloons with a dart and win a teddy bear (very big with the dykes) contest and beer from the event sponsor, Bud Light. Faubourg Marigny Art and Books was there and quite a few local authors stopped by to sign their works and talk to revelers.
There were a number of local organizations with tables: Belle Reve New Orleans, Forum for Equality, PFLAG, the Greater New Orleans Chapter of NOW, Louisiana Spirit, NO/AIDS Task Force Community Awareness Network, HRC, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, SGI-USA. I was working the table for the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of New Orleans and Gulf Gender Alliance. We were able to get a few membership pledges and talk to some people about volunteer opportunities. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the table to chat.
It was a family and dog friendly event (someone even brought their pet goat!).One of the perks was to see how the recovery is going by the number of friends back in town. I would guess that this year had double last year’s numbers. The Grand Marshal guarantees that next year we will have a parade. Yeah!
